A COLORFUL NEW YEAR IN THE MEKONG DELTA
In the Mekong Delta when spring comes you will be dazzled by the radiant shades of red and yellow of spring flowers and the colors of watermelons, pineapples, pommels, jambs, kumquats, etc. The New Year in the land of gardeners is also attractive to visitors for the orchards laden with fruits, lush green rice paddies and the river thick with fertile silt.
The Mekong Delta is the peaceful land which cultivates beautiful emotions depicted in verses of folk poems and songs handed down through generations. Ben Tre, Can Tho, Long Xuyen, An Giang, Chau Doc or as far as Ca Mau, each and every name is a loving home land for someone and will always be the place that someone longs for every time the spring comes.
In Chau Doc, hop on a sampan and visit the floating fish farms on the peaceful river. Cross to the other side and take a walk in the village of the Islamic Cham, visit the mosque and then a brocade weaving workshop. Continue the journey to pay tribute to the Holy Mother at her temple at the base of Mt. Sam, flanked by the colorful Tay An Pagoda and Thoai Ngoc Hau mausoleum. To indulge in the dreamy shade of green, go to the mangrove in Tra Su and venture through the quiet canals watching flocks of bird flying home in sunset. Go further south to the beach of Mui Nai, a scenic vista which has gone into local poetry. In Rach Gia otherwise, visit the temple of Nguyen Trung Truc, a national hero representing patriotic nature of the Vietnamese. To the Mekong, you cannot miss out Can Tho, the capital city of the delta. Don’t forget to take a boat trip to the bustling market in Cai Rang and blend into the floating life of Mekong dwellers. Leave the boat and take the small road along the river to My Khanh where you find the cheerful atmosphere of the New Year with exciting traditional games.
