Whether you land in the big city lights or humble countryside villages, these are five dishes you must try from our favourite Asian nations.

1. Bánh mì thịt, Vietnam

The Vietnamese answer to the sandwich, bánh mì thịt is a crispy baguette smeared with paté and a mayonnaise-like butter, then filled with slivers of pork, picked carrot, cucumber, and coriander, and drizzled with soy sauce. The perfect on-the-go snack!

2. Roti canai, Malaysia

Bypass the eggs benedict in favour of roti canai in Malaysia. This breakfast staple begins as oily dough that is stretched tissue thin, before being folded up, griddled, and served alongside curry. The result is a flat buttery bread that’s chewy on the inside and flaky on the outside.

3. Chilli crab, Singapore

Singapore’s ubiquitous national dish is far from spicy, despite its name. Meaty mud crabs are smothered in a sweet yet savoury tomato-based sauce, eaten with bare hands, and accompanied by deep-fried mantou buns to soak up the luscious sauce.

4. Pad Thai, Thailand

Thailand’s famous fried noodle dish is a true star of street food in Asia. Billowing smoke and the kiss of a flaming wok impart a smoky flavour to this simple yet complex concoction of flat noodles stir-fried with eggs, tofu, and prawns, and flavoured with the perfect balance of salty fish sauce, sour tamarind, and palm sugar.

5. Ramen, Japan

Slurping down a steaming bowl of ramen has to be one of the most pleasurable dining experiences in Japan.
This unctuous noodle soup takes many variations, from rich pork broth (tonkotsu) to a soy-based broth (shoyo). Dedicated restaurants can be found all over – some of the best are in train stations!
