Update on Bangkok political protests TAT presents facts on Bangkok protests

THE Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has issued its first “Fact Sheet” on political developments in the capital ahead of a weekend of planned protest rallies, starting tomorrow.

  12/03/2010 08:36

The move to issue the Fact Sheet, as TAT described the document, came as 34 countries issued or updated their travel advisories on travelling to and within the kingdom during rallies by anti-government red shirt protestors.

In the document, TAT explained that the Cabinet’s decision to invoke the Internal Security Act for specific areas of Bangkok and seven nearby provinces from March 11 to 23 was a necessary step to ensure law and order.

It also said some preventive measures had been put in place, including setting up checkpoints and patrols in the inner area of Bangkok and nearby provinces.

A few roads around important government buildings will be temporary closed while rapid deployment units have also been arranged to ensure timely responses in case any incident occurs.

“For tourists visiting the kingdom, it should be stressed that foreigners have not been targeted in the ongoing political conflict,” the TAT fact sheet stated.

“However, foreigners are advised to be vigilant, particularly in the areas where crowds may gather.”

For tourist assistance or information, contact the TAT Cell Centre by dialing 1672. (Sources: Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok)
