Reporting live from the 2nd Jeju International Green MICE Week

At the opening of the 2nd Jeju International Green MICE Week, MCI sustainability services advisor Michael Luehrs said: "In the last 10 years, there has been interest in going green, and green meetings have become a brand. Today, the international trend is that green meetings have rapidly become sustainable events."

According to Luehrs, many destinations and suppliers have introduced green initiatives but very few have taken a strategic approach towards sustainability. To accelerate this process, destinations needed to take the lead. He cited Jeju as a positive example where efforts had been made to preserve the natural environment.

Jeju Tourism Organisation president Park Yung-Soo said Jeju was developing smart grid MICE products to make the island a green destination.

South Korea is working on promoting smart grid technology, which is now being tested in Jeju. The nationwide project will involve the production of hybrid vehicles and the use of renewable energy sources.

Jeju also continues to develop the Jeju Olle walking trails, which will cover the whole island in three years' time.
