Indonesia trails in arrivals target

Results are, however, still far behind the destination's target of seven million arrivals.

Further, travellers' length of stay had fallen 11.62 per cent, from 3.04 days last year to 2.66 days, due to a higher percentage of regional travellers. Asian travellers typically spend an average of three to four days compared to long-haul travellers' 10-day stays.

Despite the results, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is optimistic that the seven million arrival target will be met.

Director general of marketing Sapta Nirwandar said: "We are still optimistic (because) an upsurge (in arrivals is expected) between July and August, and during the year-end."

The ministry will continue to establish a strong presence in key markets, especially in Europe, with the appointment of a Visit Indonesia Tourism Official (VITO) in the Netherlands. It will also increase the frequency of direct promotions in key markets.
