MYANMAR's hoteliers have reported a surge in room bookings for Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake during the current high season from October to March compared to last year.

In Yangon, Chatrium Hotel had received more bookings from business and corporate travellers, said sales and marketing director May Myat Mon Win, who expected occupancy for the season to grow by 20 per cent over last year.

Park Royal Hotel sales director Susie Moe Aung reported similar results and anticipated an 18 per cent growth this season.

At Inle Lake, Golden Island Cottage manager Khun Maung Ngwe believed more tourists were flocking to Myanmar this year as the country was "still a new destination for many people."

"There are many tourists who have never visited Myanmar even though they have been to other Asian countries many times," she said.

Sentiments were the same elsewhere. Hotel Red Canal in Mandalay received more bookings for October till December, while Ayeyar River View Hotel in Bagan is seeing a 20 per cent growth in occupancy, especially from November to February.
