Under the conditions of the Open Skies treaty between the US and Japan, penned late last year, airlines can start operating services to Japan’s busiest airport in October. Previously they were restricted to Narita airport. Delta will connect Haneda with daily Boeing 747 fl ights from both Detroit and Los Angeles. Hawaiian has been given permission for one daily fl ight from Honolulu, although it plans to add another daily service at a later date. The Hawaiian fl ights will be initially operated by a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, before upgrading to a new Airbus A330-200. American Airlines will operate daily fl ights from New York’s JFK airport, using a Boeing 777 aircraft in a threeclass confi guration. The newlymerged United and Continental Airlines had both individually applied for Haneda fl ights, but were denied permission by the DOT. Delta also applied for Haneda fl ights from Seattle and Honolulu, but was declined permission. Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s President and CEO, commented; “We are delighted at the prospect of being able to start new service to Tokyo soon. We had applied for two  round trips… and plan to ask the DOT to reconsider granting
Hawaiian a second daily round trip.”.
