“NON CHUONG" TRADEMARK MARKED IN HA NOI'S VILLAGE
A recognizing ceremony was held to mark “Non Chuong” trademark in Phuong Trung commune, Thanh Oai district, Hanoi on November 15 .
Chuong village is a long-standing traditional palm-leaf conical hat making traditional trade village with various products. This is the place not only to exchange goods but to occur the cultural activities in the region, especially village handicraft culture conical hats, contests of human chess, rice cooking. To make a proper hat it is not only required the marker’s talent but also their experience.
They then must be quickly submerged in water to preclude tearing and breaking. Main rings (the largest) must be even, smooth and shiny. The most sophisticate work is treading the palm material. The markets buy dark green palms, then clean them by sand and work the with a light touch or other while they will tear. After the step of treading the palms, they sun- season them. The palm will go from dark green to white. The stronger the sun the whiter he palms wii become. Before using the palms, makers expose them briefly to sulfur to make them whiter and to preserve the color.
Finally, before using them, they are exposed to frost to make them soft, and then they are split and ironed. Chuong hats are different from hats of other provinces which are revolved only two times, with the second being in a reverse direction, Chuong village’s hat are revolved three time, two time with white palm and once with bamboo cataphyll. Thank to the addition layer of bamboo cataphyll, Chuong hats are more solid and durable. |
The conical hats fabricated with a bamboo frame and covered by leaf. Each household of Chuong village can produce the conical hat. The materials are simple: leaves for covering; bamboo for the frame, rattan strings and now the industrial thread, some rattans to fabricate the frame.
Almost all Vietnamese people feel close to and have deep attachment to Non. The image of girls in traditional long dress and Non has been absorbed into folk music and songs and becomes a beautiful symbol of Vietnam.

The National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, recognized the collective trademark of "Non Chuong". The event marks the new development stage of Non Chuong. It is also a good condition for the village to expand their market.
